What is Y-DNA?

To explain it in layman's terms, Y-DNA traces paternal (male) lines.

Tested:

Descendants of AARON JACKSON & Marie Dorothee Thibodeau

MAYNARD JACKSON ... great grandson (see In memory)

DONALD "ALLEN" JACKSON ... 2nd great grandson (see In memory)

KEITH JACKSON ... 3rd great grandson

Descendant of BENJAMIN JACKSON & PATIENCE PRESCOTT

NATHAN JACKSON ... 3rd great grandson

FamilyTree Y-DNA Results

Y-DNA TiP Report:  FamilyTreeDNA

In 2015, I had KEITH JACKSON tested with Y-111. (I was a newbie at this point and was told to take the largest test I could afford.  At that time this was the Y-111).

From this first test I was connected with one match, ARTHUR R JACKSON (see In Memory,         ) who is a direct descendant of Walter Jackson (Scottish Prisoner #82 on the ‘John and Sara’).

Family line:

Arthur Richard Jackson (Francis Wood, Cyrus Lendon, Ebenezer T, Josiah, William, William, Walter)

After getting these results, I added a Y-DNA 37 test for MAYNARD JACKSON to confirm the results.

It was in 2021 that I received contact from Cindy, the daughter of Nathan Jackson who is a direct descendant of Benjamin Jackson and Patience Prescott through their son Benjamin Jackson and his wife Esther Roberts .  A Y-37 dna test was given to Nathan Jackson.

MAYNARD JACKSON, KEITH JACKSON and ALLEN JACKSON were both listed as EXACT matches to Nathan Jackson at the Y-37 marker level.

In August 2021, I upgraded the Y-37 DNA test to a Y-111 DNA test to make all tests on an even playing field.

Note: It is interesting that Keith Jackson, known great nephew to Maynard Jackson and Allen Jackson, nephew Maynard Jackson (all descendants of Aaron Jackson) share more Y-DNA with Nathan Jackson (descendant of Benjamin Jackson).   We know that Keith Jackson is definitely the great-nephew to Maynard Jackson as the Ancestry.com DNA shows them as a close relative with the following: (Shared DNA 1,254 cM across 37 segments and Allen Jackson, nephew of Maynard at 1,724 cM across 39 segments)

In this Y-111 DNA case, Nathan Jackson and Keith and Allen Jackson have more similar Y-DNA parts than Keith and Allen Jackson to his great uncle and uncle Maynard Jackson.  This is a great example why it is important to test multiple people.

Continuing research with Y-DNA Tests:  FamilyTreeDNA.com.

These Y-DNA tests have been added to the Jackson Surname Project at FamilyTreeDNA.com.

"This project is for members who have the surname Jackson, or derivatives in their ancestry that is covered by the test(s) taken. For example: If you have taken a YDNA test and your direct paternal ancestors are Jacksons, or you have taken an mtDNA test and one of your direct maternal ancestors is a Jackson, or you have taken the FamilyFinder test and you have the Jackson surname within 10 generations, or any mix of the above."

========

They have also been added to the Scottish Prisoners; Transported Scottish Prisoners of the Civil Wars (1650s)

"This Y-DNA Project aims to research and discover more about the fate and descendants of the Scottish prisoners taken in two battles of the English/Scottish Civil Wars - the Battles of Dunbar (1650) and Worcester (1651). Thousands of Scots were taken prisoner by Cromwell's New Model Army following these battles, and many of them were transported to the American colonies of New England and Virginia instead of being allowed to return home.  There they were indentured into service for a number of years, though most survived to be released from this and settle to work their own land in time.  Two ships known to have carried Scottish prisoners are the Unity - which carried about 150 prisoners from Dunbar to New England in late 1650 - and the John and Sarah - which carried around 300 prisoners from Worcester to New England a year later.

The first goal of the project is to work on discovering more about the Prisoners transplanted to New England.  The project is also open to those who believe they may have a Dunbar or Worcester ancestor who was transported to Virginia, Bermuda or other destinations in the New World in 1650-51. It is hoped that Y-DNA may help make connections to relatives of the prisoners in Scotland."
